The long way
to polar bears.

Five days across the Canadian Shield. One wild shoreline, ancient rocks, Native history, lots of Red Bulls, one chaotic multilingual music playlist, and a flight to polar bear country waiting at the end.

THE IDEA

A road trip
before the trip.

Not the quickest way to Winnipeg, but why take the easy route when you can take the prettiest one 😉

THE TRAVEL BRIEF / 01

Two Chaos Goblins. One driver who'd refuse to give up the steering wheel anyway. A rental Jeep Wrangler with proper winter tyres. Plenty of wilderness to go around.

Arrival in Winnipeg scheduled for Tuesday, November 10. Keeping the 11th clear in case northern Ontario storms decide otherwise. Then flying to Churchill on the morning of the 12th for polar bear photography.

05 / THE ROAD NOTES

Respect the
conditions.

✳

Black ice

Dry pavement can turn slick on bridges and shaded bends as temperatures cross freezing. Winter tyres matter more than a 4×4 badge.

≈

Lake-effect snow

Watch the Sault → Wawa → Marathon → Nipigon stretch. Localised squalls can reduce visibility or close Highway 17.

☾

Darkness + wildlife

Short November daylight, moose and long sections without services. Minimise night driving on remote two-lane highways.

SCENARIO PLANNER · NOT A FORECAST

Choose the road you get.

06 / READY TO DRIVE

The field kit.

A small practical checklist for one driver, November weather and photography equipment.

THE VEHICLE

Winter tyres first.
Wrangler second.

THE NON-NEGOTIABLE

Confirm four tyres carrying the three-peaked mountain/snowflake symbol. Check one-way rental permission from Québec to Manitoba. And remember: rental 4×4 does not mean off-road driving is allowed.

Before every remote section: check road cameras and warnings, fill up fuel, download offline maps, and let the schedule flex.
